“Detox” Chocolate Chip Cookies
Now that I have your attention again….
I want to start by saying this name could be applied to pretty much any recipe if you try hard enough, because ALL food has a function. And foods that promote detoxification are just foods that show a little extra support to our body’s natural detox pathways - such as the gut, liver, kidneys, skin, and lymphatic system
Luckily, there are so many simple and natural things that we can do on a daily basis to support our body’s natural detoxification process - things that don’t involve a pill or a green juice. Don’t get me wrong I love me my green drinks, but because they make me feel great and fill my body with amazing essential nutrients. Things like sleeping, hydrating, sweating, and consuming a variety of both prebiotic and plant based foods are all just as, if not more, effective as that overpriced juice
So these cookies were inspired by just that. They’re plant based, high in prebiotics and fiber, and even promote a restful sleep. And maybe if you make them fast enough, you’ll even break a sweat!
All jokes aside, they’re so freaking delicious. They’re chewy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and the very middle is slightly underbaked and literally taste like cookie dough when you warm em up. Bonus, they’re filled with nutritious ingredients that support some of the most important bodily systems.
Here are some of those special ingredients:
Oat flour: high in prebiotics to support the gut and fiber to support digestion
Arrowroot powder: one of the easiest starches for the body to digest, arrowroot plant commonly used in homeopathy as a natural immune booster due to its antiinflammatory properties
Coconut oil: antiinflammatory, antibacterial, and antimicrobial to fight toxins, viruses, and other bacteria in the body
Cacao: high in magnesium and tryptophan to promote relaxation and boost melatonin
Himalayan salt: a natural electrolyte, rich in essential minerals that boost hydration and assist the kidneys in eliminating unwanted toxins
Try them out!
RECIPE
Ingredients:
1 cup gluten free oat flour (sub any 1:1 gluten free flour, oat adds more of a chewy texture)
2 tsp arrowroot powder
1/2 cup coconut sugar
3 tbsp melted coconut oil
2 tbsp coconut milk
2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp baking soda
Himalayan sea salt to top
Directions:
Combine dry ingredients in a bowl until no clumps remain, then fold in wet. Gently stir in baking soda and chocolate chips until a dough forms. Refrigerate dough for at least 30 minutes or until chilled.
Roll dough into balls and bake at 325 for 10-12 minutes. Remove after 8 minutes and tap the baking sheet against the counter to spread cookies if you like them crispier, then put back in the oven.
Remove from the oven and top with salt. Let cool completely to firm up before removing from the baking sheet.
